Este libro sirve como una referencia rápida para practicantes especializados en oncología, practicantes generales, estudiantes médicos y residentes activos en la atención de campo.

El libro contiene 64 capítulos (divididos en 14 secciones) enfocados en enfermedades individuales que se presentan de forma frecuente u ocasional en la región resaltada (América Central y Sudamérica, junto con el Caribe). Se exploran los cuidados de la enfermedad a nivel multidisciplinario, observando el rol de los médicos de diagnostico (patólogos, radiólogos), así como el de los médicos tratantes (oncólogos médicos, cirujanos y radioterapeutas). También se elabora sobre ciertos protocolos de atención en el contexto de variantes especificas del cáncer, incluyendo temas como el manejo de prioridades de atención oncológica en entornos con pocos recursos.

Entre varios cambios importantes, esta tercera edición incluye una nueva sección ('SECTION XIV') dedicada al entrenamiento de personal en ramas específicas de la atención. En ésta se incluyen capítulos independientes para cada especialidad involucrada en el tratamiento (médico oncólogo, radiólogo, cirujano, etc.), aportando una base general que permita orientar y actualizar tanto a profesionales jóvenes como a otros más experimentados. Esta edición también incluye revisiones pertinentes en otras áreas, y algunos pasajes han sido re-adaptados para mayor claridad.
